Is Your Faith In the Progressive Tense?

I love hearing testimonies of the transforming power of God. Sadly some testimonies are years-out-of-date. Yes, it’s wonderful what God did for you years ago, but is your faith in the progressive tense? What has happened since you first trusted Christ? What current evidence is present in your life that God continues the good work which He started?

In Acts 2 Luke describes the progressive activity of the newly formed fellowship of over 3000 believers. Note the words he uses –

“Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:46-47)

continuing to meet – breaking bread – eating together – praising – enjoying = God blessed growth

a) continuing to meet –

True Christ followers want to ‘hang out’ with others who know the Saviour. Younger believers enjoy ‘belonging’ being part of the family of God. The hymn ‘I’m So Glad I’m a Part of the Family of God’ was still to be written almost 2000 years later, but this was their sentiment. They met and met and met and met. They could pray together, worship together, sing together, fast together, share together–all of the one anothers which the Lord had prescribed for a growing fellowship.

b) breaking bread/eating together –

The Twelve had broken bread together with their Master on many occasions. Eating together signifies fellowship, and it appears they remembered the Lord’s death as part of their common meal.

c) praising God –

Sure, an individual may praise God alone, but there is a blessing in corporate praise.

d) enjoying favour –

This would not always be the case. Soon persecution would burst out of the gates and test the fidelity of God’s people. Even in our ‘Christian Canada’ the spiritual atmosphere has changed–radically changed–as biblical morality and ethics are seen to be outdated for the 21st century! We are commanded to pray for our government leaders–even when they enact legislation (like Ontario’s Province Bill 89) which radically defies the God-given authority of parents and pushes a ‘gender ideology’ contrary to the Word of God.

God’s blessing followed. The newly formed church had health and growth–something every living body of believers should be experiencing. Let’s seek God’s help to be a community of faith that reflects these strategic priorities. May the Lord add to our number a multitude of those who hear the gospel of God’s grace and see a grace-filled community functioning in local gatherings of believers. Now that’s faith–in the progressive tense!
