God is never in a rush. He knows the ‘end’ from the ‘beginning.’ Running through Mark 13 is a sense of God’s direction of the events of history. The disciples asked “When?”
Jesus answered –
v.7 “…the end is still to come.”
v.11 “whatever is given you at the time….”
v.13 “stands firm to the end….”
v.19 “…those will be days…until now–and never to be equaled again.”
v.20 “…those days…”
v.23 “I have told you everything ahead of time.”
v.24 “But in those days…”
v.26 “At that time….”
v.29 “…it is near, right at the door.”
v.32 “No one knows about that day or hour…”
v.33 “You do not know when that time will come…”
So if only God knows where we are on the prophetic clock, why do ‘Bible teachers’ keep setting dates? Are they ‘wiser’ than God? The challenge in interpreting the prophetic timetable is a willingness to admit our ignorance of God’s timeline. “We are in the last days!” Of course we are–John noted that in his epistle as did Paul. The last ‘days’ seem to have been launched by the return of Christ to His heavenly throne. Are we in the ‘last’ of the ‘last days?’ We are closer now than ever, yet the precision of timing remains a mystery!
How should we then live? Here the direct commands of Jesus, “Be on guard! Be alert! Keep watch! Watch!” Ignoring the activity of the world around us is not an option. Keeping actively engaged and be ready when your Master comes!
