What’s it like to come out of darkness into the light? What is it like to be in a dark room and then have someone suddenly flip the switch, causing the entire room to be flooded with light?
In Ephesians 5:8-14 Paul reviews the spiritual transformation that has taken place within the lives of the members of this local congregation of believers by using the analogy of darkness and light.
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible–and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. This is why it says – “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
We were once darkness. Isn’t it amazing how our eyes function? Take a walk in the darkness without any artificial or natural light to assist you and you begin by moving very slowly. Your eyes adjust to the lack of light and your pupils enlarge to allow any portion of light in so you can see. Living in darkness means being cut off from the God of light. Living in darkness occurs as we grow more and more accustomed to ‘dark ways’ to the patterns of sinful conduct which clamour for attention in our heart.
We would still be in darkness, still lost in our sin, if it wasn’t for the God of light. God is light and His Son, our Saviour, is the light of the world. God penetrated the darkness of our lives and brought us light, spiritual deliverance which we would have in no other way. We didn’t ‘discover’ or ‘invent’ the light. God did and we are the great beneficiaries.
How should we then live? We should live in the light. We should allow the Spirit of God to expose all the darkness and implant the very character of Jesus Christ into the core of our being. We are now on a mission of discovery. We are to ‘find out what pleases the Lord.’ Where shall we find this? In God’s word, as His Spirit presses home truth into our mind, will and emotions.
We must eradicate the darkness and distance ourselves from it. We don’t have to be ‘current’ on all the patterns of evil–it’s desirable to be “out of touch” and “ignorant” of evil practices. Why would I want to see the latest YouTube video? Why would I want to fill my mind with the conduct of those who are under God’s judgment? What eternal value will I extract from the darkness? The words “viewer discretion” advised should be more than ample warning that the conduct portrayed on the screen (large or small) will not build me up in any way.
Lord expose my life by your light. Make visible what I think I have hidden successfully from Your eyes that I may walk in your light. Christ, please awaken me from my spiritual drowsiness and shine upon me, into every corner of my life. May I learn to hate the darkness and allow the light of Christ to so fill my life that others may be drawn to Him. You are the Light of the World. You are my Light. I surrender to you. Amen.
