“Great is Thy Faithfulness” is a hymn that has dogged me on my spiritual journey. I grew up in a church that sang it frequently and memorized the words quite early. I headed off to Bible College in 1979 and discovered it to be the hymn of choice, the school’s theme reflected in musical form. When my wife and I committed ourselves to God and to each other, we opted for this hymn as part of the corporate worship in our Canadian Thanksgiving weekend wedding.
The chorus declares this affirmation –
“Great is Thy faithfulness, Great is Thy faithfulness,
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided,
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.”
In the style of first century letter-writing, the writer (John) identifies himself, his audience and then extends greetings. These greetings are not just pleasantries but are deep desires for God’s attributes to impactfully be granted to those who are following Christ.
“Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love.”
Grace, mercy and peace–Divine attributes granted as gracious gifts and received with gratitude by those who so desperately need them. Hourly, daily, weekly, yearly–you name the frequency, and you’ll discover the need for God’s help. God’s abundant resources, e.g. grace, mercy and peace, are exactly what you need.
These attributes are not human accomplishments or virtues which are cultivated through effort. No! God the Father and God the Son, Jesus Christ, are acknowledged by John to be the fountain from which these virtues flow. John is confident that our needs will be met by divine supply. He is not ‘hoping’ this will happen. He is settled that they ‘will be with us in truth and love.’ There is certainty!
Imagine being the child of a monarch. As you live your life your needs are cared for through abudant supply. The Royal children don’t ‘worry’ about food, clothing or anything! All of their needs are provided for, not by themselves but through the gracious dealings of those to whom they are related.
God’s children are dealt with no less generously. “All I have NEEDED, THY HAND hath provided,” has been sung throughout the world as children of the KING of kings declare their gratitude for His abundant supply.
So whatever you need, as a Christ-follower, and I trust you are a genuine child of God–God will supply. Let your heart express a deeper gratitude than ever before to God this day and throughout your lifetime.
