The word “love” probably fills more “Facebook” statuses, blog posts, cards and emails today than any other day in the year. When it comes to love, everyone has an ‘opinion.”
Mark Twain wrote – “Love seems the swiftest, but it is the slowest of all growths. No man or woman really knows what perfect love is until they have been married a quarter of a century.” While I appreciate Twain’s ‘sage wisdom,’ I’m convinced being married 25 years does not produce a knowledge of perfect love.
Perfect love only proceeds from a PERFECT being, and surely 25 years of marriage (some sadly don’t last even that long), provide evidence of imperfection more than perfection.
The PERFECT Being, the PERFECT Lover is GOD alone.
“…love comes from GOD. ….GOD is love…This is how GOD showed HIS love among us: HE sent HIS one and only SON into the world that we might live through HIM. This is LOVE (Here’s the definition): not that we loved GOD, but that HE loved us and sent HIS SON as an atoning sacrifice (better translated propitiation) for our sins.” These extracts from the pen of the Apostle John, the one who described himself as the disciple “whom JESUS loved…” are enriching.
Lest we conclude that only John was captured by this theme, let me remind you of 1 Corinthians 13. Embedded in the context of an analysis of spiritual gifts, Paul writes…
“LOVE is patient, love is kind. IT does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” (I Cor. 13:4-7)
I love my wife. I jest at times that because I have some Scottish blood running through my veins, I love her even more because Valentine’s Day and her birthday are the same day on the calendar. If I forget one, I remember the other. Either way I’m covered!! But seriously, the love I have for her will only transform into what it should be, if I allow the Holy Spirit to produce through me the “FRUIT of the SPIRIT which is LOVE…..”
