Trembling Nations

As Habakkuk recounts the movement of God in history, he depicts His impact.

Plague went before him;
pestilence followed his steps.

He stood, and shook the earth;
he looked, and made the nations tremble.
The ancient mountains crumbled and
the age-old hills collapsed.
His ways are eternal.

I saw the tents of Cushan in distress,
the dwellings of Midian in anguish.

Were you angry with the rivers, O LORD/
Was your wrath against the streams?
Did you rage against the sea when you rode with your horses and your victorious chariots?
You uncovered your bow,
you called for many arrows.

And then Habakkuk inserts the word “Selah.”

God has been orchestrating HIs plan. God has been controlling world events and the nations of the earth are slowly learning that they are not in charge. How many times throughout human history has God kept the pressure on nations, cities, towns, villages, families, even individuals? God has a purpose in all He does. O that the world would follow the instruction of Isaac Watts, as he writes, reflecting on Psalm 98 –

Joy to the WORLD, The Lord is come!
Let EARTH receive her king….
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And heaven and nature sing….

What happens to those who will not receive the King? What will be the outcome of those who do not prepare Him room? As Christ “comes again” through the message of His birth as we hear it sung, preached, prayed and celebrated, may we each respond with our own R.S.V.P. Those who reject the LORD, will be among the company of those of whom Scripture writes, “Look, HE IS COMING with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen.”
