Habakkuk encountered God’s glory in his day….
“God came from Teman,
the Holy One from Mount Paran.
HIS GLORY covered the heavens
and His praise filled the earth.
His splendour was like the sunrise;
rays flashed from His hand, where His power was hidden.”
What did Habakkuk see in the 7th century B.C.? “The heavens declare the GLORY of GOD; the skies proclaim the works of His hands...” (Psalm 19:1) Some mornings driving along a busy highway (#401 between Oshawa and Toronto), I am blessed to see the sunrise in my rearview mirror. On the return trip later in the day, many a sunset has captured my diverted attention. Though pressed for time, and knowing it would be unwise to pull off to the side of a major expressway, I am tempted to stop by car, stop traffic and ask, “Do you see it? Can’t you see the glory of God portrayed across the skies? Sadly, many drivers don’t even see the car in front of them as they continue to “text and drive” occasionally raising their head to avoid hitting the next vehicle at 100+ km/hour.
Habakkuk encountered GOD. He saw His glory, praise, splendour and recognized His hidden power. His “world-view” was God-centred. I wonder if ours is…..
What did the shepherds see in the fields nearby Bethlehem? “An angel of the Lord appeared to them and the GLORY of THE LORD shone around them… a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising GOD and saying, “GLORY to GOD in the highest….” The “Shekinah” glory, the glory evident in the pages of the OT and often only seen by priests in HOLY places is now visible to ordinary people as the HOLY ONE has been born. The Saviour has been born. He is CHRIST, the LORD. You may seek HIM! You will find HIM! You may know HIM! You may share HIM! Amazing! How many individuals this year will seek HIM? find HIM? know HIM? share HIM?
Individually and collectively throughout the pages of the New Testament we find testimonies of those who have encountered GOD’s GLORY. “The WORD became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen HIS GLORY, the GLORY of the ONE and ONLY, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
May you catch a glimpse of GOD’s GLORY this Christmas! May your heart be filled with overflowing praise! To GOD be THE GLORY, great things He has done…. We will glorify the KING of kings, we will glorify the LAMB! We will glorify the LORD of lords, who is the great I AM.
