To whom does Jude, this servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James pen his letter?
who have been called,
who are loved by God the Father and
kept by Jesus Christ:…”
These Christ-followers have been and are the object of God’s attention! They have been called…. Long before they knew God, He knew them. Other New Testament passages confirm the intentional ‘choosing’ of them before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4) God drew them to Himself, called them to believe in Christ and began a life-long process of rescue. Jude looks back with the words “have been,” doesn’t he?
They are loved by God the Father
In the pastoral counseling I have done over several years of ministry, I have discovered not everyone has experienced a father’s love. Some fathers misrepresent God and abuse their role within the family. Tragically this often leaves a huge void and many times impacts the individual’s ability to trust. “The Father Heart of God” – an article found here at Last Day’s Ministries, of which Keith Green was the founder, provides thoughtful reflection on this topic.
“Loved by God the Father” – can you grasp the scope of that love? Paul prays in Ephesians 3:17-19 that the church there, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp the overwhelming dimensions of the love of Christ! Surely every true Church, every Christian family, every individual Christ-follower needs to share in this amazing attribute.
They are kept by Jesus Christ
True faith is depicted not in me holding on to Christ, but rather Christ holding on to me. He is a Good Shepherd, a Chief Shepherd, a Great Shepherd as John 10, I Peter 5 and Hebrews 13 affirms. He looks after His sheep. His sheep know Him and He knows them and keeps them safe in His nail-pierced hands.
Do you recall the old Allstate commercial? Their tagline was “You’re in good hands with Allstate.” I’ve never tested that claim, but as a Christ-follower since God first called me into a living relationship my testimony and yours too, if you know Him, is that we are in great hands, the very hands of our God and Saviour, Jesus Christ!
